The temperature during the year cans vary between 22° and 37° Celsius degrees. The rain season begins in January and goes until end April. The rest of the year is very dry, what influences the lagoon’s level of water. The most part of the lagoons have no water during the dry season (between October and February).
In the afternoon, at 14:00, we will depart in a non-air-conditioned 4x4 jeep. We will cross the Rio Preguiças by barge and then follow a sandy trail that leads to the entrance of the Great Lençóis Maranhenses National Park. From here, we will begin a hike across the dunes to explore the beautiful area of Laguna Bonita. We will have the opportunity to swim in fresh, crystal-clear lagoons formed between the dunes. The rains, which fall between February and June, create numerous clear lagoons, some green and others blue, with depths of up to 4 meters. The strong winds, especially in the second half of the year, cause the dunes to shift by up to 20 meters per year, constantly reshaping the landscape, which is never the same from one season to the next.
We will return to the city after 19:00, after witnessing a breathtaking sunset among the dunes.
Overnight in Barreirinhas with breakfast.

The first stop is in the Vassouras region to visit the Pequenos Lençóis Maranhenses and see local fauna in the monkey tent known as “tenda dos macacos”; second stop is in the village called Mandacarú, a small fishing village where you can to appreciate various craft shops, the best caipirinha in the region at the kiosk on the pier and if accessible, you can climb up the light house called “Farol Preguiças” navy lighthouse to enjoy an enchanting panorama that embraces the entire mouth of the river and part of the National Park of Lencois Maranhenses; we will continue by boat crossing the river Rio Preguiça and we will arrive at the Atins beach around 11:20 am / 12:30 pm, where we will wait the 4X4 jeep ( no air conditioning) that will take us to the pousada.
Some important things to know about Atins: it's a small city whose sandy streets can get hot during the dry season; there are no pharmacies; there is limited access to technology as the internet and cell phone signal is unstable; the local electricity grid is precarious; and during the high season, the traffic is very intense and noisy. There is no public aqueduct and each pousada has its own water well. The water in the rooms' bathrooms is not completely transparent, which is characteristic of the region. Due to its location in the middle of nature, insects and other animals such as small lizards, frogs and/or ants are common and sometimes manage to get into the rooms, despite the measures taken to minimize these inconveniences. In brief, anyone who decides to stay at Atins must be adaptable.
